Youth Hub Distance Learning Center

The distance learning youth hub is a place where any student in Nevada County (even college students) can come to access high speed internet in order to complete their distance learning. Parents or guardians of students in third grade or younger must remain with students while at the hub. It’s a safe, supervised, calm environment where caring adults are ready to help answer questions and navigate tech issues. The center offers two meals a day provided by GVSD Child Nutrition Services as well as lots of snacks and water. Kids are able to study outside in a fenced off area and walk the fairgrounds during breaks. Art supplies and playdough are available. The youth hub was created to meet specific internet needs during the pandemic but has also met other unforeseen needs as each student navigates unique barriers to distance learning during COVID.

“The last nine months have been hard on families, and it’s been amazing to offer an alternative that helps. While there isn’t much socializing able to happen, I think it’s been helpful for the youth using the hub to just be around their peers, and see that everyone really is dealing with the same things right now, and they are not alone in the world.” -Cori Ove, Site Coordinator with Bright Futures For Youth (Friendship Club and NEO)

Currently, the hub is drop in 8:15 am to 2 pm Monday to Friday at the Nevada County Fairgrounds, Main St Building, Gate 1. For more information call Cori at (530) 615-1626 or corio@friendshipclub.org. All COVID Safety Guidelines are followed.

Through the Screen - What's Up Goes Virtual

Unprecedented times continue, but together we are stronger! What’s Up Wellness has been hard at work this year revisioning ways to reach isolated youth at home with virtual Wellness Checkups.
Currently, What’s Up staff are Zooming into classes at high schools in Nevada County to provide Checkups to participating 9th graders.
Wellness Checkups will continue virtually at most NJUSHD and TTUSD high schools through the 20/21 school year.

So far, the Checkups are revealing the far-too common psychological strain of these times on our youth - academic stress, social stress, family stress are just some of the challenges teens face.

The good news is that we are finding teens that want and need help. Virtual school supports, community supports, mental health resources are being offered to otherwise isolated youth who can’t rely on their established support systems. We’ve created Mind Your Mind - a YouTube Channel with local mindfulness teachers creating videos on how to manage stress. Also this year we have contracted with Family Resource Specialists who have been actively developing virtual resource guides for teens and families.

It’s a time of adaptation and our services will continue to evolve as necessary - this is a time when we need each other the most! Small acts of kindness bring us strength, and we need strength to navigate challenging times. Wishing you all health and strength as we walk this unusual terrain together.

-Shellee A. Sepko, MA, LMFT, Program Director
